Starting June 22nd through June 27th every year, the annual event of Bunny Care Week, focuses on promoting the proper care, health tips, and welfare of pet rabbits. Breeders and veterinarians ultimate goal is to ensure your bunny is not only the happiest, but the healthiest as well. In addition, passing this information along to both current and potential bunny owners can be one of the most effective ways to help promote these topics as a whole. In honor of this very special event, this week's blog articles will be touching on some of the most relevant topics pertinent to bunny care starting with your bunny's diet!
A bunny's diet consists of a combination of hay, pellets and vegetables. Pellets make up a smaller portion of the diet in total, roughly about fifteen to twenty percent. The majority remaining consists of Fresh Cut Hay and vegetables. Vegetables aren't usually introduced until the four to five month mark, so making sure your bunny has an unlimited amount of clean fresh cut hay is essential to your bunny's health and development. We recommend a combination of Fresh Cut Timothy Hay along with Fresh Cut Alfalfa Hay in which the two hays combined gives a great combination of nutrition. Eventually you can pair in the vegetables which become another essential part of your bunny having a long healthy life. Some fantastic choices of fruits and vegetables include Apples, Bananas, Kale and Parsley when they reach the appropriate age.
Your bunny also needs a constant supply of fresh water. Bunnies do not have sweat glands so water is an essential part of hydration and regulation of body temperature. It is especially important to keep this is mind during the hot summer months. Sterile water is best, however bottled water is suitable as well. We do not recommend tap water as it doesn't have a filtered quality and can contain bacteria and even parasites. It isn't guaranteed to be detrimental but the risk of it being harmful can easily be avoided by using bottled or filtered water.
In terms of treats, most of them just are not healthy choices despite what some brands and labels may claim. We have done an in depth dive into quite a few of the most popular ones and despite the "all natural" or "healthy" claims, when broken down by ingredient they generally are anything but those things. There are definitely some treats, toys, and chews we do recommend if you want to spoil your bunny, though! However, it's usually it is best to do your due diligence and cross reference your selection with your veterinarian if you decide to go that route. Certain items like all natural wood chews are certainly viable choices.
