I was on Linked In the other day and an article came across my feed from one of my Animal Activist connections that talked about "Laboratory Testing on Rabbits". Now as someone who considers themselves an expert in Holland Lops and a pretty well versed understanding of the bunny world in general, I was pretty baffled to see how vigorously the third most popular pet in the world was used for the most cruel type of lab testing there could possibly be. Additionally, I was surprised at the amount of bunny farms there are in the United States, roughly 5,000, used for Fur and Meat at a net profit ratio that is so low and unregulated that you could make more money literally taking a job at $15 dollars an hour minimum wage and make more money without torturing a pet. I quickly want to add, lets make no mistake, bunnies in this day and age should be used to be domesticated pets to make lives better, and for that reason only. So how can that be, and why would it occur then? The answer is it funnels to Multi-Billion Dollar Industries which are Pharma and Fashion. These industries have lawyers by the hundreds and will crush any non-profit group that stands in their way, it is unfortunately the honest truth and the way capitalism works. How can it can be countered? To this point it has not, and will continue to not, but if we can put a face of the owner of the pet bunny like the little girl who's parents got her a pet bunny pictured above, maybe the narrative can be altered as a point of starting by humanizing bunnies into the category of cats and dogs. To give you a breakdown of what does occur to these bunnies, and I use bunnies as often as possible because the word rabbit in my opinion devalues them as how great of a pet they are and favors them as more consistent to a "Lab Rat". "PURPLE LEASH PROJECT"
Purina has launched the "Purple Leash Project". This is a focus on the barrier that is sometimes created when you are a pet owner and it gets in the way of leaving your abuser. This could be having to leave your pet in danger and feeling forced to stay for their sake, or threatening your pet by your abuser if you leave. The focus is to help the victim escape the situation with their pet and them staying together. Three months ago there was a story relayed to us where a woman's boyfriend beat her and stomped her pet bunny to death. At the time, she wanted this to be posted to our Instagram but was a very heart wrenching, descriptive, story that at the time was very morbid. On a positive note, with this launch going public, we want to help! If you are the owner of a pet bunny that you need kept in a safe environment until you escape your abusive situation, please call and we will board your bunny in a home setting for absolutely no charge for up to a week to help you escape your current situation. All names will be completely anonymous and not displayed anywhere. All calls will remain internal solely with myself and no other staff members. You will also receive a video daily to bring your spirits up when going through this trying time. I wish we could board all pets, unfortunately we are only equipped for pet bunnies. WE ARE HERE FOR YOU IF YOU NEED...
