I was on Linked In the other day and an article came across my feed from one of my Animal Activist connections that talked about "Laboratory Testing on Rabbits". Now as someone who considers themselves an expert in Holland Lops and a pretty well versed understanding of the bunny world in general, I was pretty baffled to see how vigorously the third most popular pet in the world was used for the most cruel type of lab testing there could possibly be. Additionally, I was surprised at the amount of bunny farms there are in the United States, roughly 5,000, used for Fur and Meat at a net profit ratio that is so low and unregulated that you could make more money literally taking a job at $15 dollars an hour minimum wage and make more money without torturing a pet. I quickly want to add, lets make no mistake, bunnies in this day and age should be used to be domesticated pets to make lives better, and for that reason only. So how can that be, and why would it occur then? The answer is it funnels to Multi-Billion Dollar Industries which are Pharma and Fashion. These industries have lawyers by the hundreds and will crush any non-profit group that stands in their way, it is unfortunately the honest truth and the way capitalism works. How can it can be countered? To this point it has not, and will continue to not, but if we can put a face of the owner of the pet bunny like the little girl who's parents got her a pet bunny pictured above, maybe the narrative can be altered as a point of starting by humanizing bunnies into the category of cats and dogs. To give you a breakdown of what does occur to these bunnies, and I use bunnies as often as possible because the word rabbit in my opinion devalues them as how great of a pet they are and favors them as more consistent to a "Lab Rat". -150,000 Bunnies are used on testing on a yearly basis -Bunnies are chosen and preferred due to their docile nature and ability to easily handle -They are mostly used to test toxicity rates on cosmetics and house hold products -Majority of testing is done on their eyes, which have lead to ulcers, bleeding and worse outcomes. -The list of companies to list is too long! Even Bleach is tested on them! I will not disclose specific companies but you can easily find the list by googling Peta and companies that experiment on bunnies -The results mostly come out inconclusive because well they are Lagomorphs and transfer from a bunny to a human is too big of a jump liability wise for a "Go Ahead" on a specific product. So what does that leave us with? A whole bunch of tortured bunnies that could have been with families. If you are a Director or higher at Pfizer, Celgene, Johnson & Johnson, Novartis, Procter and Gamble Etc. you are compensated with Restricted Stock Units, a yearly bonus, and a very large salary. How do I know this? I used to do retirement plans for certain employees there. The sliver of revenue put into Research and Development really can be adjusted by just over compensating every single Director and higher less and look for some alternative routes, which can be found! Every time someone puts a chemical in a bunnies eye I want the picture in this article to run through their mind, and if that does not change your sentiment on what your about to potentially put this bunny through then maybe humanity towards animals has just been lost all together. With that said, I will still continue to do our part in getting wonderful bunnies to wonderful families, and maybe there will come a day where bunnies will be banned from testing. They are a pet, they are not some random animal. Their intelligence level is baffling and their love is unyielding. No animal, especially a bunny deserves that.
