One thing I have really learned over the years is that keeping your bunny healthy is all about being proactive. If you avoid the situation all together, it will make theirs and your life much more pleasurable. Now I know that does seem blatantly obvious, but when it comes to bunnies early warning sign recognition, and quick acting on your part, will not only save you a ton of stress, but it will save your bunny a ton of avoidable suffering. This is one of the first things I touch on when I speak to potential bunny owners, how we operate proactively, and it makes a HUGE difference. It is not necessary to be at a veterinarian level of knowledge to stay ahead of any issues. You can simply get down the basics, then reach out to us, or your veterinarian. The best thing is that our bunnies being indoor eliminate almost 50% of all bunny illnesses, such as Fly Strike and Myxomatosis. Below are the most common health issues bunnies run into, and how to proactively prevent it! 1. Sore Hocks- This is when your bunny's feet become raw, irritated, and can lead to infection. One cause can be chicken wire bottoms, our Cage Packages have solid bottom cages, which we recommend. Chicken wire bottoms are not bad overall but it is easier to maintain healthy paws when your bunny has a comfortable solid bottom. Another cause, is not properly cleaning the cages and litter box. Urine is acidic and if left for an extended period of time, can eat away at your bunny's skin. The best way to go about avoiding this is making sure you clean you bunny's paws with a wet wipe if they are dirty, and once a month dip your bunny's paws in 6 centimeters of warm water, and bunny approved shampoo, then massage them to give a nice cleaning. This also helps remove stains as well!
2. Snuffles/ Upper Respiratory Infection- If you bunny is showing indications of sneezing, nasal discharge, and discharge around their eyes. This could be signs of an Upper Respiratory infection. The best way to avoid this is a clean environment, make sure there are not hay particles and dust in the air, and generally this does not occur. The good news being aware of these symptoms, getting your bunny to the vet will ensure they will come out okay on the other end because it has had less time to fester and attack your bunny's immune system. 3. Teeth Issues- This can be caused from your bunny not having enough hay to grind their teeth down, a lack of chew toys, and treats with an excessive amount of sugar. Again, since the day you take your bunny home, they are equipped with their Timothy Hay, Alfalfa Hay, and Pellets. If you purchased one of the Bunny Bonding Bag Kits you are now also equipped with all natural treats, all natural wood chews, and toys. As long as your bunny has access to these items, then they should have a nice set of healthy teeth. It is important to monitor them still from time to time, just to be extra careful. 4. Heat Stroke/ Extreme Temperature Fluctuations- Bunnies do not have sweat glands, making them susceptible to Heat Stroke especially with lack of fresh water. Although our bunnies can go outdoors they are limited to insect free times of the day, patios, or decks. They can never go on grass, ever, this is very important. Ticks, especially with the diseases they carry, can cut your bunnies life span in half with one bite. There is no real course of action from here to alleviate the situation. 85 degrees is the max heat threshold for a bunny and should be limited to 15 minutes in shade with a nice bowl of fresh cold bottled water. Their perfect temperature is about 68 degrees to 72 degrees. 5. G,I. Stasis- The most common for babies to get, the easiest to avoid for babies to get, especially following our instructions. Simply keep them away from any ingestible material such as paper. cloth. wool etc. We use all natural pine wood litter, instead of paper based litter for this specific reason. If you notice your bunny's diet has changed along with their bathroom habits, when caught early enough, some bottle fed Critical Care distributed by the veterinarian will have your bunny back to new in no time! If left untreated, it can and eventually most likely will kill your bunny, which is why we advocate the set up so adamantly. - To sum up, be vigilant, learn these 5 topics, and follow to procedures for the initial construction of the your bunnies cage set up, as they grow it can become more elaborate. I am very proud to say that following the process, our customers bunnies getting G.I. Stasis has been cut down to virtually zero percent, and I am being completely honest in that regard! *I hope this helps new bunny owners, and old, get a better handle of how to have heir bunny live a longer, healthy, and pain free life.
