Rabbits traditionally carry a stigma that they are not clean animals, and often because of a consistent relation to a farm animal, people will relate them to an odor that a farm animal carries. Rabbits are fantastic groomers and really are not odorous at all, even without the traditional grooming of a cat or dog. Click Read More below in order to gain an understanding of how they accomplish this both through themselves and their bathroom habits!
First, rabbits are schedule oriented pets. Our Holland Lops are specifically domesticated indoor pets and far removed from wild society for decades. With this comes the added benefit of them liking cleanliness, and to groom themselves on a daily basis. The truth is Holland Lops do not carry an odor at all. They subconsciously litter train, and as a result your bunny remains virtually odorless. Unlike a cat or dog that would need grooming from outdoor activities that will mat their fur, track dirt, and eventually create a situation in which a visit to the groomer will be required.
Second, Rabbits are Prey Animals and Vegetarians by nature. The majority of other house pets are predators, in which meat is a required part of their daily diet. What causes an odor in their feces is actually the bacteria ingested within the meat. When it comes to Rabbits their droppings are small solid pellet like circles with essentially no odor at all due to their Vegetarian diet. While Urine across the board will carry a small odor, by the time it is ready for a bunny to go home, their urination habits have been solely limited to their litter box.
Lastly, with proper directives we give on setting their initial set up properly, it simply comes down to proper cleaning of their habitat, in which the steps are simplistic and followed very easily. Combining all these factors, paints a very different, and much more accurate picture of what it is like to own a indoor pet rabbit. Thus breaking the stigma of rabbits being what some will call a smelly animal. As long as the proper maintenance is taken care of by their owner, rabbits are in fact one of the most cleanly and odorless domesticated pets in the world today. I feel this is a true testament to the spreading of proper education, and the result being rabbits being one of the most sought out pets in the world today! As always if you have additional questions always feel free to reach out!
